Today I wanted to discuss the amazing benefits of medium-chain triglyceride oil, or better known as MCT oil. If you aren’t familiar with the term, fear not–let me explain what you’re missing out on…
MCTs are a form of saturated fatty acid, which have been proven to provide numerous health benefits. Coconut oil is a huge source of MCTs, as roughly 62% of the fatty acids found in coconut oil are MCTs. However, as great as coconut oil is for us, we are now able to get straight to the source and buy pure, concentrated MCT oils. Because we have been taught for so long that saturated fats are not good for us, many of those who follow a classic Western diet are found to be lacking in the consumption of MCTs. However, due to increasing levels of education on the benefits of fats and fatty acids, Americans are starting to utilize more common sources like olive and coconut oils into their daily diet. So why should you start consuming MCT oil? MCTs are a huge power source for our bodies! Let me explain some of the benefits…
- Easy to digest and sent directly to the liver, where they in turn have a thermogenic effect and positively affect your metabolism
- Burned by the body for energy as opposed to being stored as fat
- Supportive of our guts: it works to kill harmful bacteria and increase immunity
- Help you maintain a “full” feeling, preventing overeating
- Gives you more energy, and as a result allows you to think more clearly, balance your hormones and improve your mood
Because of all these AMAZING benefits, MCT oil is something I consume every single day. My go-to brands for pure MCT oil are Nature’s Way and Now Sports as they all provide pure MCTs and nothing else. Barlean’s is another of my preferred brands–my favorite is the MCT Swirl in coconut, which provides your daily dose of MCT in a smoothie-type taste. Pure MCT oil is odorless and tasteless, meaning you can truly add it to anything–it’s SO easy to incorporate into your diet. My favorite way to use it is in my coffee (find the recipe in the sidebar), as it makes it extra rich and allows me a crash-free, energizing morning drink. If you’re not a coffee drinker, add it to your matcha lattes (recipe coming soon!), smoothies, pancakes, muffins–ANYTHING! It’s truly so versatile and so easy to get into your diet. No excuses!
Until next time,
Lauren
